The first shreds of doubt came upon me

in bits of second thought when I didn’t see

why he became impossible to reach by telephone,

but when asked would always say he was alone;

However, was too busy to take calls at that time–

and so, there was this niggling shred of doubt–was he lying?

And if so, why–I didn’t try to face my deepest fears–

That there was someone else–and so my many tears

were shed in solitude–I could not bring myself to face

the shreds of doubt, the shame and then disgrace–

What everybody knew, perhaps, but me,

And what I had been, for years, too blind to see.
