WHY DIDNT IT HAPPEN TO ME?

You see in the newspaper, almost every day

of the poorest and  most destitute–

“WHY DIDNT IT HAPPEN TO ME?” I cried

as I saw another person on TV–

Those downtrodden, down-in-the-mouth, sometimes homeless

winning millions!  who would ever believe

they had spent their last dollar, instead of milk or bread–

or basic human needs for their young children,

buying lottery tickets instead—these homeless, poorest

dregs of society–living it up and spending it on

stuffed animals, new cars, new kitchen appliances, a dream Disney

Cruise, letting it all slip through their fingers;

“I’d do much better” I told my son; “I’d pay off our houses,

and set up[ trust funds for the grandkids–and after that…..”

My youngest son, who is adept at cutting to the chase, remarked

“I think, mom,”  he said drolly,

“You have to buy the lottery tickets

in order to win anything….”
